Responsibility
At Anjo Atelier, responsibility begins with making less, making thoughtfully and making pieces that are meant to last.
Every hat is made by hand in Finland, one at a time and to order. We work with carefully selected European materials, traditional millinery techniques and tools that have often been part of the craft for decades and, in some cases, centuries.
Made to order
Every Anjo Atelier hat is individually made to order and made to fit the customer’s measurements precisely.
Producing each piece for its wearer helps us avoid unnecessary material waste as well as the environmental impact caused by avoidable returns and additional transportation.
We do not produce seasonal volumes or large inventories. Making only what is needed allows us to avoid unnecessary production and use our materials with care.
Our zero waste policy
Our aim is simple: materials that enter our atelier are used as carefully and completely as possible.
We plan and cut carefully, save usable offcuts and reuse materials wherever possible. Ribbons, felt, veiling and other components left from one piece can find their way into another.
Most of the tools in our atelier are old and have been used in millinery for decades and, in some cases, centuries. We believe good tools should be maintained, repaired and kept in use rather than routinely replaced.
The same principle applies to our materials. Much of what we work with has already been acquired over time, and we make new purchases selectively.
Made to last
We believe longevity is one of the most meaningful forms of responsibility.
Our hats are shaped and finished using traditional millinery techniques and materials chosen for their durability as well as their appearance.
With proper care, a well-made felt hat can last for generations.
And an accident does not necessarily mean the end of a hat. Felt can often be steamed, reshaped and restored. Whenever possible, we would rather repair or reshape an existing piece than replace it with something new.
Our materials
Our felt hat bodies are sourced exclusively from Central Europe.
We work primarily with animal hair felt and selected vintage felt materials.
In traditional millinery, animal hair felt is most commonly made using the soft undercoat of rabbit or hare. Rabbit hair makes it possible to create a material that is both lightweight and structurally stable, allowing the hat to hold its shape beautifully over time.
It also enables a range of refined finishes, from soft velour and brushed surfaces to a smooth, dense felt finish.
The animal fibres we use come from Central Europe and are processed by a long-established Central European hat-making manufacturer whose production meets current principles of sustainability, ethics and slow fashion. The manufacturer also operates under ISO 9001:2015 quality management and ISO 14001:2015 environmental management systems.
Alongside these materials, we are actively looking for a safe, durable and high-quality vegan felt alternative that meets the standards required for traditional millinery, shaping and long-lasting wear.
Vintage materials
We also work with selected vintage felt materials whenever suitable pieces become available.
Using existing high-quality materials allows us to give already produced felt a new life and reduce the need for new material wherever possible.
Because vintage materials are limited by nature, they may appear only in individual pieces or very small quantities.
Clear material information
We believe you should know what your hat is made of.
We distinguish clearly between animal hair felt and vintage felt materials in our product information rather than grouping different felt qualities under one generic term.
Where the specific animal fibre is known, we provide that information as well.
Our approach follows recognised textile fibre terminology and European requirements for communicating textile fibre composition. ISO 6938 defines standard terminology for natural textile fibres, while EU Regulation No 1007/2011 sets requirements for the fibre names and composition information used when textile products are offered to consumers.
Small-scale production in Finland
Every Anjo Atelier hat is shaped and finished by hand in Finland.
Working on a small scale allows us to produce according to actual demand, use existing materials creatively and give time to the details that make each piece individual.
It is slower than mass production by design.
Care, repair and reshaping
A hat should not become disposable because of a small accident.
If your Anjo Atelier hat needs care, reshaping or repair, you are always welcome to contact us. We are able to restore its shape and extend its life for many more years.
An ongoing process
We do not see responsibility as a finished statement.
As our materials, methods and knowledge develop, we will continue to update this page accordingly.
We would rather be specific about what we know than make promises we cannot substantiate.
Every piece is a meeting between material, maker and wearer. We want that relationship to last.
